The Foreign Language Department now has a state of the art
language lab which will be part of the weekly curriculum.
As communication in the target language is always a primary goal and research shows that students learn more when they use Spanish in meaningful personal interactions, that is, they learn to speak by speaking; the Spanish classes will now be taught in the target language with the expectation that the student also function in the language.
Teaching methods will make this a reasonable expectation. Signs will be posted around the room with common classroom questions and each student will receive a list of classroom commands with the English translation.
Student-to-student activities will provide a low-threat practice format that is both motivational and enjoyable.
Grading for participation will be based on effort, not accuracy, as it takes years to master a foreign language.
Due to the complexity of grammar the intention is still to use English. It will be entirely taught in English in the Spanish 1and 2 classes but will not be necessary at the 3rd year level.
Tutorials, extra-help will be in English as well.
Although this may seem a struggle at first, the student often begins to "get it" within a few weeks, speak with more assuredness and will feel a great sense of accomplishment. ! ADELANTE!
