Bienvenu à la classe de français!  To new students, I’m excited that you have chosen to be a part of the French program at Argyle High School.  To returning students, welcome back and I’m glad you’re continuing your studies of French.  Acquiring a second language is interesting and beneficial to your future.  I also hope it will be fun!

You will be learning many new things.  Getting the most out of each and every class and assignment will be imperative to your success.  Learning a language is a building process, and each step of the process is critical to the outcome.  In order to take full advantage of the class time and to maximize learning, classes will be conducted in French to the extent possible.  Don’t worry.  You can do it!

Required Materials for French 1, 2 and 3:

  • 70 sheet spiral notebook for daily notes and bell work
  • 3-inch 3-ring binder to hold your spiral, 2 workbooks, and all your handouts
  • Clear plastic page protector sleeves to slide your frequently-used handouts into to preserve them
  • Pencils, black pens, and red pens (additional colors, if desired)

Optional Materials:**

1 box of tissues                          1 package of notebook paper

1 package of black pens              1 package of colored copy paper

1 package of red pens                 1 package of dry erase markers

2 packages of pencils                  1 package of 3 glue sticks

1 package of markers                  1 package of colored pencils

1 package of index cards             paper towels

1 package of document protectors         AA or AAA batteries

These materials are optional, but if you bring one of these items, you will receive extra credit points.

Classroom Behavior:

I expect you always to…             J’éspère que tu sois toujours…

         Be on time                                à l’heure

         Be prepared                              préparé

         Be respectful                             respectueux

Grading:  You will be graded on a variety of assignments that fit into the following categories.

Daily Bell Work 10%                    Quizzes 30%

Tests 30%                                   Six Week Tests 10%

          Homework 10%                          Classroom Participation 10%

Since you have many opportunities for graded work, and since the curriculum provides many opportunities for practice, there should be no need for extra credit or retests.  If you need or want extra help, please come to tutorials (I am anxious to help you and encourage you to come in!), use your student tutorial disk (which will be loaned to you temporarily through the bookroom,) or access the internet websites that I will be providing.   I’m very committed to your academic success and will help you to meet your academic goals.

Make-Up Work:  The World Languages Department will follow the district policy for make-up work as stated in the Student Handbook.  Students will have the same number of days, plus one day added to the amount of time they were out of school to make up the work they missed.  A student who does not make up assigned work will receive a grade of zero for the assignment.

Late Work:  The World Languages Department will follow the district policy for late work as stated in the Student Handbook, with the exception of homework.  Homework is due the day after it is assigned at the beginning of class (please see the sections below on Starting and Ending Class and Homework.)  If you are absent, the Make-Up Work policy applies.

I have great expectations for you and all of our students, and I am sure that with your commitment and a strong work ethic, you will be successful!  It is important to stay very focused in class and to keep up with your work on a daily basis.  Ask questions and get clarification. Come to tutorials if you need help.  I am here to help you meet your goals, so don’t hesitate to call on me.

I am excited to be at Argyle High School again this year, and I’m really looking forward to a great year together!

Sincèrement,

Mme Sanders : )

Classroom Routines and Procedures:

Starting and ending class

Students are expected to be in their seats with their bellwork spirals and completed homework on their desks when the bell rings to begin class.  While students work on bellwork, I will check off and/or collect the completed homework.  Students are to remain in their seats (no standing at the door) until they are dismissed by the teacher, not the bell.  (Please see the Student Handbook for amplification.)

Bellwork

Students will be responsible for approximately 30 bellwork assignments per six- week grading period.  A bellwork assignment will be done during the first 5 minutes of each class.  It is a small but significant segment of learning that each student is required to record and maintain in his or her bellwork spiral.  During each three-week reporting period, students will have a quiz over information contained in their bellwork notes.  They will refer to their bellwork notes while taking the quiz.

Homework

Students will be assigned 20 homework assignments per six-week grading period, 10 per each three-week reporting period in the six weeks.  If all 10 homework assignments are complete and turned in on time (at the very beginning of class during Bellwork,) the homework grade for the three-week reporting period will be 100%.  If 9 homework assignments are completed and turned in on time, the homework grade for the three-week reporting period will be 90%, and so on.

Classsroom Participation

For each of the two three-week reporting periods in a six-week grading period, every student can earn a grade of up to 100% by meeting the following expectations.  Students are expected to listen attentively and refrain from talking,   whispering, or other impolite or distracting behaviors when the teacher is instructing or other students are reciting.  Students are expected to speak in French and only French when working in groups or pairs.  Those who use English will suffer a reduction in participation points, as will those who choose not to exercise full participation.  (I know listening to French and using only French may seem difficult at first, but it’s just a matter of creating a habit pattern.  In order to learn, you must use it and practice it, and we have precious little time together!)  Please watch for my raised hand to let you know it’s time to be quiet and listen.  Students are expected to come to class every day with their textbook, their French binder (the 3” 3-ring binder containing their bellwork spiral, their two workbooks, and their handouts), a black pen or pencil, and a red pen for corrections.  Students are expected to volunteer to answer questions in class by raising their hands.  They should also raise their hands to ask questions.

In adhering to these procedures, we can truly make the most of our time together, and I hope you will enjoy it as much as I do! : )
